Reflection Statement:

The surface pattern entitled A Queen's Hand was inspired by a deck of playing cards. My intent was to visually communicate the elegance of playing cards; from the visual design of a deck to the intricate skill and natural whit it takes to be good at playing cards. I wanted to focus on the stitching details of each individual element. The red suits are double layered with two tones of red felt with a couched border of red yarn and gold thread. The black suits are double layered with black and grey felt with a couched border of black yarn and silver thread. I decided to include metallic thread to elevate the design as well as the silk backing. I feel the work is not lacking any details. It is a delicate piece that is simple but complex in technique. This piece has allowed me to explore the art of couching, which I have grown to love. I want to learn more about creating patterns. I also want to keep exploring how the layering of different techniques and fabrics can interact with each other.
